RADIATION - THE 3D ADVENTURE GAME
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for purchasing Radiation, my first official public domain game.
Radiation has taken me approximately fifteen weeks to complete, and not just
something that I knocked up in one night. If you take into consideration the
very small asking price of this game, this to me represents excellent value
for money, and every copy of Radiation that is sold will very much increase
the possibility of another 3D adventure title appearing later on.
But for now, please sit back and play Radiation - The 3D Adventure Game.
Once again, thank you for your support, and I hope that you enjoy Radiation.
With regards,
JASON J LUKIES
RADIATION - The Scenario
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are Brian Roberts, an employee of NEUTRA POWER, the world's biggest and
most successful Nuclear Development Laboratory. Your company has successfully
completed its latest project - a revolutionary nuclear power reactor known as
the NUCALINE, which has taken approximately ten years to design, develop and
finally release. It proved so successful in the laboratory that ELECTROGEN,
an electricity company owned by NEUTRA POWER, ordered three NUCALINE reactors
for their new power stations that are to be completed within seven years.
Five years later the first of the three power stations was completed, and so
NEUTRA POWER delivered the first reactor unit to ELECTROGEN, who installed it
in the newly completed power station. The station underwent safety regulation
tests, at which time the reactor unit was also tested. Both the power station
and the NUCALINE reactor unit passed with flying colours. Since your company
owned ELECTROGEN, you were assigned a temporary position in the power station
as a nuclear reactor technician.
At 12 noon on the 23rd of January that year, the reactor was powered up for
commercial electricity generation for the first time. Because all previous
testing had gone perfectly without incident, naturally it was assumed that
the very same result could be expected once the reactor had commenced power
generation. However, this was not the case...
Approximately thirty minutes after the reactor was switched on, one of the
reactor warning lamps lit up. The warning indicated there was a shortage of
reactor coolant fluid in the core, so the reactor control rods were engaged.
The problem disappeared, so the control rods were disengaged, and it seemed
that the problem has vanished completely. At this time you were being given
a guided tour of the power station complex, when suddenly, without warning,
a violent explosion shook the building, almost to its foundations. The force
of the explosion knocked you to the ground, hitting your head, which renderd
you unconscious. When you finally came to you realised that you were alone
in a room somewhere in the power station, and much to your horror it quickly
became apparent that there had been a meltdown of the reactor core, and that
everyone else who was in the complex at the time had been evacuated.
Your mission is to find your way safely to the reactor core, and remove all
traces of damaged nuclear fuel rod, and transfer them to the emergency fuel
rod storage facility located in the building. Once you have completed your
task, you must evacuate from the power station before the entire complex is
overcome with radiation levels that are so intense, that even a radiation
proof suit will not be capable of protecting you.
There are a few aspects of Radiation that I would like to mention, so you
will know how they work in the game. The power station is very modern and
very high-tech, the most advanced system in the building being the security
system. The system scans your DNA as you walk around, and can detect who you
are and where you are. If it recognises you as an employee, it will freely
let you go where you want, but if it detects you as an intruder, then a few
interesting security techniques come into effect. Since the security system
has malfunctioned due to the meltdown, it cannot identify you, therefore it
regards you as an intruder!
The first part of the security system are the doors. Several of these will be
activated (locked) because of the malfunction, and the only way to overide
them is to carry a security passcard with you. With these, you are allowed
entry into the room you wish to go to. But remember, most doors have their
own passcard, and you'll have to find them!
The other part of the system is the shooter network. These domes are spread
throughout the power station, and once they detect you, they will shoot at
you... with lethal doses of radiation! Not even a radiation proof suit will
protect you from them! Too much of this and you will die. The only way that
you can deactivate the shooters is to destroy them with a laser gun, which
you have to find. It is somewhere in the power station... but where?
RADIATION - Aspects About The Game
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are several objects you will need to collect to complete your mission.
Firstly, you require a RADIATION PROOF SUIT, to protect you from the high
levels of radiation in some of the rooms and corridors. But beware... this
suit, even though it is high-tech, cannot protect you from all radiation.
The first type being the shooters, and the other being the intense levels
of radiation in the reactor core containment building. You can only enter
this area for a certain amount of time, and once that time limit is up, you
will perish.
You will also require a few items to enable you to collect the fragments of
nuclear fuel rod in the core. I'm not going to spoil the game by telling you
what they are, you'll have to discover them all by yourself! There are also
several less important items in the game, but some of them do come into play
somewhere along the line. Once you come accross them, you will have to rack
your brains to find out where they are used, and how you use them!
The best way to play this game is to look at everything, go everywhere and
try everything, otherwise you'll never finish the game! If you do happen to
make a mistake, you can either start again, or revert to a saved position.
I decided to include this option to make the game easier to complete, and
many of you will probably find this a valuable addition to the game.
On the screen there are three bars that depreciate over time. There is one
on the left side, and two on the right side of the screen.
The one on the left marked with an "R" and a symbol of a man is your reactor
exposure limit. This decreases whilst you are in the reactor building. Once
this reaches zero, you die and the game ends.
The left bar on the right (if that makes sense) marked with a clock is your
overall time bar. As you play the game, this slowly decreases over time.
Once it reaches zero the whole building is overcome with levels of radiation
that even a suit can't withstand, so you die.
The other bar marked with a man is your energy bar. This decreases everytime
you get shot by a security shooter. If this reaches zero, you die.
You can also die in the game by falling from heights, colliding with highly
reactive objects and touching things you shouldn't touch. But dispite the
fact that death is all around you, don't let it get to you. You have a task
to complete, so just gather all of your strength, intelligence and wit and
do it. Then get out of there before you perish!!!!
Best of luck!!
RADIATION - Staying In Control
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The arrows on the screen are your movement controls. You can move forward,
back, left, right, up, down, rotate left, rotate right, look up, look down,
look centre and rotate 180 degrees (look behind).
Use the RMB for coarse movements and the LMB for fine movements.
You can manipulate objects in two ways. You can SHOOT things by using the
LMB, or you can ACTIVATE things by using the RMB. Oh, by the way... don't
worry if shooting things doesn't seem to do anything... when you start the
game you don't have a gun... so you'll have to find one before you can shoot
anything!!
